30 Years of FLOWCAL: The Gold Standard for Measurement

March 31, 2025

This year marks 30 years of FLOWCAL setting the benchmark for oil and gas measurement software. Used by more than 80% of North American midstream and upstream companies, its longevity is a testament to its unmatched reliability in an industry that never stands still. As economic and regulatory landscapes evolve, FLOWCAL remains the foundation for operators worldwide to achieve greater measurement accuracy, efficiency, and success.

With hundreds of customers across four continents, FLOWCAL’s ongoing evolution is led by a world-class team with centuries of combined measurement expertise. Its suite of field measurement applications—TESTit, PROVEit, PYCit, ANALYZEit, and CALCit—supports every critical function, from consolidation and validation to correction, balancing, and reporting. No other system offers the same depth and breadth of gas and liquids measurement.

Reaching this 30-year milestone is more than a reflection on the past—it’s a launchpad for the future. Let’s take a look at the defining moments in FLOWCAL’s journey and explore the innovations set to shape the next era of measurement.

The Making of FLOWCAL

FLOWCAL grew out of Coastal Flow, a measurement services company with 50 years of industry experience. When it was initially developed, the EGM process was highly manual, lacked visibility, and often overlooked field errors—leading to product loss and data inaccuracies. Determined to create a better solution, the team released FLOWCAL’s first desktop application in 1995, automating complex processes and bringing transparency to field measurement and flow computer validation.

Adoption quickly followed as oil and gas companies recognized the benefits of digitizing flow measurement. By working closely with industry experts and prioritizing real-world measurement needs, FLOWCAL continued to evolve, always driven by what mattered most to its users.

Building on its success, FLOWCAL expanded with a suite of field applications—TESTit, PROVEit, PYCit, ANALYZEit, and CALCit—designed for equipment calibration, sampling, scheduling, validation, and provings for natural gas and liquids. Together, these applications reinforced FLOWCAL’s role as the trusted standard for measurement data management.

Setting Industry Standards and Driving Collaboration

Aligning with industry standards and organizations has been essential to the success of FLOWCAL and field applications. As Flower Pledger, Quorum’s SVP Product, Midstream & Measurement puts it, “We've built this software for over 30 years with direct feedback from our customer advisory board, plus new and evolving industry standards. We're constantly reaching out for customer feedback to iterate on the product in a way that benefits everyone."

How FLOWCAL Does It: The Power of Industry-Driven Integration

Longevity in the measurement industry comes from deep expertise, not just software development. As one Measurement Data Systems Supervisor at a major midstream company put it, FLOWCAL “didn’t come from a software background. They came from a measurement background that did software. Over the years, their developers and SMEs have provided the industry insight and direction that set FLOWCAL up as the industry leader.”

For over 30 years, upstream and midstream companies of all sizes have relied on FLOWCAL and its field measurement applications. Accurate measurement data is essential—not just for compliance, but for seamless integration across the business. Time-consuming manual processes both in the field and behind the computer have now been replaced by FLOWCAL’s automation, streamlined workflows, and tighter connectivity between field and office operations.

FLOWCAL doesn’t operate in isolation—it’s critical to the broader energy value chain. Its measurement data integrates with Quorum’s gas gathering and plant accounting, pipeline transaction management, crude marketing and logistics, production operations, and SCADA applications, along with other third-party and downstream systems. This connectivity ensures that measurement data flows effortlessly across the organization, supporting more accurate decision-making.

Continuously led by measurement experts and deeply embedded in the industry, the team is able to evolve by meeting measurement’s evolving needs. No other software or company matches FLOWCAL’s depth of experience nor its direct involvement in the measurement community. The FAB-8 Customer Advisory Board provides a direct line to industry priorities that shape the product roadmaps, while the Uservoice Program aligns customer feedback with product development. Industry events—whether attended by FLOWCAL experts or hosted by Quorum, such as Qnect Measurement in Houston and the Qnections customer conference—further reinforce this commitment.

FLOWCAL’s history is one of continuous innovation, shaped by the industry it serves. And that’s why it remains the gold standard in measurement today.

The Next Chapter for FLOWCAL

From its beginnings as a measurement-driven solution to becoming the global standard for measurement data management, FLOWCAL has continuously evolved to meet the industry's needs. After 30 years of innovation, its journey is far from over.

The enhancement roadmap is guided by deep measurement expertise, industry best practices, customer feedback, and the energy sector’s digital transformation. Future advancements will prioritize data accessibility, seamless integrations, and cross-product insights to not only meet but exceed customer expectations.
